With the launch of the forums, we wanted to share a few principles with everyone. They outline the type of community we hope Breakaway can be. We think playing games online can make all of us better games and better people. So we got together, wrote down principles that inspire us, and gave it a cool name. Or at least we think it’s cool. Tell us what you think in the comments!

Be a Leader

A leader leads by example, not by force.
-Sun Tzu

Leaders are a paragon for great behavior. By setting the example for everyone, you’ll help yourself and everyone around you have a better time, and maximize your team’s chances to win the game. Be the best version of yourself that you can be.

Fight for your Team

Warriors are not what you think as warriors. The warrior is not someone who fights, because no one has the right to take another life. The warrior, for us, is one who sacrifices himself for the good of others.
-Sitting Bull

Should go without saying, but Breakaway is a team game. If victory is what you’re after, excelling at coordinating with your team is as important, if not more, than your individual performance. Are you putting as much effort in supporting your team as in improving your skills?

Defend the Meek

I am not afraid... I was born to do this.
-Joan of Arc

It’s easy to pick on new players. It takes courage to defend them and support them. Help build a better, more welcoming community for Breakaway.

Speak with Good Purpose

If you had fought like a man, you needn’t be hanged like a dog.
-Anne Bonny

Feedback is great. Insults are not. By telling a teammate they’re an idiot, not only have you just won multiple reports towards being banned, but you have actually decreased your chances to win the game. We have the data to prove it: toxic gamers just win less. So when you speak, do it with purpose: venting helps no one. If you want a teammate to play better, point them in the right direction with a tip or two, rather than insulting them for what they did.

Learn from Your Mistakes

Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.
-Bruce Lee

Conversely, no one is perfect. You’ll make mistakes, everyone does. So when a teammate gives you constructive criticism and recommendations on how to play better, listen to them. The pursuit of mastery in Breakaway is one of the greatest satisfactions you can get. Learn to learn, and it will be yours.

Show Humility in Victory, and Grace in Defeat

For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories.

Together with mastery, the ability to exercise control of your emotions is also a great gift of testing yourself in competition. Be a better gamer, and playing Breakaway will be way more than a pastime. It’ll be a way to grow.
